Qualifications
- BS in Mechanical, Aerospace or Related Engineering Field with 2 years of CFD or 1-D engine/machine systems analysis experience
- Strong background and interest in thermo-sciences
- Clear verbal and written communication skills
Desirable Qualifications
- MS or PhD in Mechanical, Aerospace or Related Engineering Field
- Working knowledge of engine and powertrain cooling systems
- Working knowledge of diesel engines
- Experience with Fluent, 1-D analysis tools, and Pro/E
- Strong project management skills
Responsibilities
Aftertreatment and Cooling Products (ACP), Large Power Systems and Growth Markets
Utilize analytical techniques to develop and validate cooling system designs considering performance needs of Caterpillars products.
- Develop cooling system specifications
- Size and select heat exchangers and fans using 1-D analysis tool
- Determine water circuit configuration including pump sizing, flow split balancing, and pressure drop assessment using 1-D analysis tool
- Generate multiple cooling system concepts and maintain analytical master models with accountability to make sure cooling system meets performance specifications
- Collaborate with design partners to meet ambient temperature capability, fan power and noise requirements
- Determine pressure drop characteristics of cooling circuit components with CFD
- Develop CFD models to understand air flow through cooling packages
- Develop underhood thermal CFD models to predict component temperatures and effects on cooling package airflow
- Participate in cooling/airflow validation tests and correlate analysis models
- Perform analysis to assist CPI teams to resolve cooling-related field problems
- Work to continuously improve the accuracy and efficiency of cooling and underhood thermal analysis processes and tools
